Notes from our first meeting

Our first meeting today went well and we were able to put some plans in motion for Lent. Our main project for Lent is origami birds!
Here is the plan:

* Members of the congregation will write down a prayer on a piece of paper that will then be folded in to an origami bird. (This will be an ongoing process throughout the season of Lent)

* We will provide paper to different groups (Sunday School Classes, committees, etc.) as well as a folding tutorial.

* These birds will be placed in two large bird cages at the front of the church. The doors to these cages will remained closed (as the tomb of Jesus was closed) until Easter.

* On Easter morning the congregation will find that the bird cages are open and their prayers (birds) will be strung and flying up toward the cross at the front of the church. Symbolically - Their prayers/concerns/sins will be lifted to God. This idea will be created in both the sanctuary and the chapel.

This is a brief summary of our main idea (I am typing quickly and am certain that I am leaving out important details) and it is open for change or improvement. It is also subject to John's approval. :) We are also going to make new banners but the design for those is yet to be determined. If anyone else wants to elaborate on this idea...feel free. I must run to put kiddos to bed, but I am really looking forward to reading everyone's input!

  1. Thanks, Darcy, for this great site and the info!

I had a thought on the way home - what color do we want the birds to be? I think the book's example had all white. Darcy had a good idea to have a special color for the children - maybe blue and the rest white. Or we could have a rainbow of colors. I'm leaning toward something mono-chromatic (at least for sanctuary), but could be persuaded otherwise. Thoughts?

  2. I think just white as well. We can look into other ways to accent the sanctuary with white as well. What do we want to put up on next to the cross...(where we have the angel and star for xmas)?

  3. I don't think we need a birdcage for the Chapel. it's too small. We could just install the bird prayer chains, week by week. What do you think?

  4. blog blog blog blog.... :)

    Good idea for this Darcy!

When I talk to Hobby Lobby I will see if they can donate to us just white and blue paper - BUT - origami packs always come in multi color packs .... no matter how you buy it. So, if we buy the packs we will be wasting paper not using it all, or, if we get it donated. I dont have a problem with multi color, but will see what I can get either way.

  7. Mimi thinks we should do the pancake dinner on Ash Wednesday just before the 7pm service. We will get more attendance with having both the dinner and service on the same night.

  12. Yea those are the prettiest ones for sure, if we can afford 2 of them that would be awesome.

We can also get the lot of 9 for $200 and then spray paint them different colors and add tooling (sp?) and airy fabric to them to jazz them up. Whatever we buy we can also resale on craigslist if needed.

  15. Hobby Lobby has cut small cages for $29.99 - 49.99. with a 40% off coupon, they may be affordable for the chapel...and maybe we could do several in the sanctuary. Just a thought.
